Pemba is a port city, formerly known as Porto Amelia and is renowned for its Portuguese colonial architecture and endless string of pristine white sand beaches. Pemba is a prime destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts as the Quirimbas Archipelago and coral reef lies close to the shore. Although not currently a major tourist attraction, it makes for a relaxing and enjoyable stop, with almost perpetual sunshine and blue skies. About 5km east of the town center is Wimbi Beach, the main hub of tourist activity and favored destination for most visitors. Rains fall mostly between December and April. During this time humidity climbs to an average of 80 -90%. On average March is the wettest month; January is the hottest month with an average temperature of 28 degrees celcius and June is the coldest month with an average temperature of 24 degrees celcius.
