The city of Maputo was formerly known as Lourenço Marques and is the capital city of Mozambique. It is a diverse and lively metropolis, rich in culture and history, made so by the influence of travelers and traders from Africa, Asia and Europe. Maputo has an eclectic night life, with its high-quality nightclubs, jazz bars, art galleries and restaurants. Maputo's close proximity to some major cities in South Africa make this seaside city a perfect getaway for relaxing, partying or clubbing. The area is famous for its spicy prawns and Portuguese chicken. February is the hottest month in Maputo, with an average temperature of 26 degrees celcius, although daily temperatures sometimes go above 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. Summer temperatures are often tempered by cool sea breezes. The coldest month is June with an average temperature of 19 degrees Celsius. Rains fall largely between December to March with the wettest month being January (average of 120mm of rain). Humidity can be uncomfortably high during the rainy season.
