At least 21 people were killed and about 30 wounded in a car accident on Sunday morning at National Road N4 in Luís Cabral neighbourhood. A light vehicle skidded and flipped over a group of young people attending an on-site party.
This is probably the deadliest road accident caused by a single light vehicle in the country. There were close to 50 victims, according to the chief of operations of the traffic division at the Police General Command, Paulo Langa.
The vehicle was destroyed, after hitting various obstacles and finally nestling between the pillars of a pedestrian bridge.
The causes of the accident, which occurred at around 2 a.m., are for now hypothetical, but eyewitnesses do not rule out the possibility of an attempted escape after the vehicle was approached by an alcohol control brigade that was nearby.
The majority of the victims were young residents of the Luís Cabral neighbourhood who participated in a carnival party.
