Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique and has a major shipping port, which is a gateway for the central region of the country, as well as the landlocked countries of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. It is the capital of the the Sofala province. It has a compact central area, an addictive harbour-town energy, attractive colonial-era architecture and a short, breezy stretch of coastline and is famed for its seafood. Beira has a reputation as one of the easiest places in the country to catch malaria, so plan accordingly. Gorongosa National Park is about 200km north and may be of interest to some visitors. The hottest month is January with an average temperature of 28.5 degrees celcius. July is the coolest month, with an average temperature of 21 degrees celcius. The rainy season falls roughly between the months of November to March.
